We've got the look

A week ago our homeschool group was planning a clean up day in one of the local parks. We were going to take rubbish bags and gloves and go and tidy they place up a bit. Unfortunately it was scheduled for what was supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year with an extreme UV warning...

9am:
Mummy McT: "The park activity has been cancelled because it's too dangerous to have all the kids out in the sun cleaning up the park."
Boys: "Awww, it's okay, we would just drink lots of water and we'd be fine"
10am:
Mummy McT: "Time to hang out the washing, boys"
Boys: "But mum, it's too dangerous to be outside doing stuff like that because it's so hot"
Mummy McT: *stares them in the eyes* "drink some water"

They know the Mummy Stare... unfortunately some of them have adopted it into their own repertoire of smart-a**ery and can deliver a killer comeback with a deadpan face and eyes locked on their target.

I'm sure it was passed on by genetics and is not a learned behaviour... nope, that one just couldn't be helped... now lets just pray they use it for good and not evil.

Monkey knows the power of a well timed look

You can't put this on facebook

Okay, I'm pretty careful about remembering that not all my facebook friends have little kids and even fewer have such a male dominated family.  They may not want to know all the gross stuff that goes on in our house that although funny, is still poop related.  As such, some things just don't go on facebook... this one had to be shared.

Monkey is getting better at manipulating his big brothers to get his way.  He's learning from their cues what his appropriate response should be.  This afternoon he walked into the middle of their room and filled his nappy.  From the gagging/choking/gasping for air sounds his brothers were making I'd say it had a good odour to it.  Their crazy reaction made Monkey's day!  He'd walk towards them and their increased wailing and backing off would just encourage him to go and try it on the other one.  Their passionate plea of "go out to mama, pleeeeeeease" was just more than one little Monkey could handle.  All of a sudden I heard the door close and his little giggle as he trapped his brothers in their room while it steadily filled with the stench of a thousand rotting eggs.

I'm not sure if I should be proud of his masterminding or horrified that my two year old has figured out for himself the basic concept of playing Dutch Oven.

Dragon Pulls a Reverse Indie

Remember that scene in Indiana Jones where the door is coming down and he does a groovy roll underneath it and escapes just in time only to find his hat has been left behind so he has to swiftly reach back under the almost closed door to grab his hat just as it comes down.  Yeah, it's the only scene I have seen from any Indiana Jones movies... oh, no, it's not! I have seen that one where he is legging it away from a massive rolling boulder.  But that scene has nothing to do with today's story so go back to the one with the closing door.

So, we all know that I am totally paranoid about snakes falling off the top of the roller door as I hit the button to open it.  Then with the appearance of the freakishly huge snake on my back patio my paranoia was ramped up a notch or two.  Combine that with one of my totally rational fears being realised and I was having a little bit of trouble setting foot in my garage.  The main problem was that I walk into the garage and close the door to the house behind me and the roller door is still closed and I have quite possibly shut myself in a room with a snake and no exit.  So, to calm myself down I decided to keep the door opener for the garage where I could get it to open the roller door before I close the door to the house.  Make sense?  Snakes have an escape and so do I and I'm not standing right under the roller door to have a snake dumped on my head.  Anyway, on Tuesday I opened the door into the garage with my arms full of baby and belongings and Dragon ran ahead of me into the garage and I hit the garage door opener so that any snakes could escape from certain death by 3 year old karate chop and started trying to get the door closed behind me.  After a couple of seconds the sound of the roller door opening changed... I wasn't familiar with this sound... it HAD to be the sound of a snake stuck in the mechanism... didn't it?  After all that was the only sensible thing it could be!

I lift my eyes from my handfuls of baby and stuff and see Dragon pulling a reverse Indie... he wasn't rolling under a closing door he was HANGING from an opening door...

artists really dodgy impression

The door was about 2/3 open and he had HEAPS of air beneath his feet... He dropped down and turned around, awestruck at his own awesomeness.  "Whhhhoooooaaaaaaa, did you see that?"  his little adrenaline fueled body rippling with excitement at his achievement.  Mummy was less than impressed... at least I hope that is what he saw... because I was trying very hard to not laugh and to hide my amazement that he had pulled it off!

It turned out that Daddy had told the boys that if they tried that, that the door would come back down and crush them in two (it's got a special emergency stop thing that means it wont really crush them but it will give them a nasty fright if they do get caught under it) and of course Dragon decided that this should be tested.

So now do you think they are going to believe anything daddy says?

Raising Boys

To understand what the object above was being used for, please refer to point #16 below.

The following is an email someone sent to us, well a few people have sent this to us over the last 4 years. I thought it was funny when Lion was in utero, but now that he is getting to that age, as well as Dragon, it is not so funny as prophetic... I've placed the ones we've experience in bold.

Apparently this came from a Mother in Austin, Texas.

Things I've learned from my 4 Boys

1.) A king size water bed holds enough water to fill a 2000 sq. ft. house 4 inches deep.

2.) If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.

3.) A 3-year old Boy's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.

4.) If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound Boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape. It is strong enough, however, if tied to a paint can, to spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 ft. room.

5.) You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit. A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way. (not experienced a baseball but small toy cars work as well)

6.) The glass in windows (even double-pane) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.

7.) When you hear the toilet flush and the words "uh oh", it's already too late.

8.) Brake fluid mixed with bleach makes smoke, and lots of it. - the boys are not allowed in the garage for this very reason, and others, like Daddy's tools can also damage things, like your brother's head, as well as fix things.

9.) A six-year old Boy can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36-year old Man says they can only do it in the movies.

10.) Certain Lego's will pass through the digestive tract of a 4-year old Boy.

11.) Play dough and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.

12.) Super glue is forever.

13.) No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool you still can't walk on water.

14.) Pool filters do not like Jell-O.

15.) VCR's do not eject "PB &J" sandwiches even though TV commercials show they do. - along with other items like toast, bread crusts, erasers, credit cards, army men, CD's and the keys to the lock which is supposed to stop them from doing that was inserted into the VCR

16.) Garbage bags do not make good parachutes. - neither do plastic shopping bags or any other item which may resemble an umbrella and contrary to what you see in the cartoons, flapping your hands does not keep you in the air after jumping off the back of the couch.

17.) Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.

18.) You probably DO NOT want to know what that odor is.

19.) Always look in the oven before you turn it on; plastic toys do not like ovens. - other appliances like the dishwasher, dryer and washing machine need to be checked for 'washing' as well.

20.) The fire department in Austin, TX has a 5-minute response time. - Mummy McTavish has learnt the 'key' words which will get the North Queensland Emergency services at our door in a little under 11 minutes.

21.) The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.

22.) It will, however, make cats dizzy. - the cat's here have enough sense not to go within 5 metres of our boys.

23.) Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.

24.) 80% of Men who read this will try mixing the bleach and brake fluid.

25.) 80% of Women will pass this on to almost all of their friends, with or without kids.
