The Post Christmas Post 2010

Christmas is done and dusted.  The tree has been decorated and destroyed.  The fat man has been and gone.  The presents have been wrapped and unwrapped.  The treats have been made and eaten. Carols sung, toasts made, photos taken, children spoilt... it's been a good year.

Now it looks like Santa's Elves threw up all over my house.  New toys strewn across the floor... in the lounge room... the play room... the kitchen... the dining room... the bedrooms... EVERYWHERE!  Wrapping paper hiding in all sorts of weird places, just when you think you have thrown out the last piece of toy packaging the kids have found another piece that they just can't bear to be separated from because "it can be used as an aircraft carrier" or "but it's perfect for something, mum".  Almost every decoration has been stripped from the lower branches of the tree and I've given up re-hanging them, now they just get tossed back under the tree.  There are two gifts left for two little boys who were away for Christmas but they will be delivered tomorrow.  There's still fruitcake to eat, the ninjabreadmen are all gone, the chocolate pops are all eaten, most of the chocolates people gave us have been consumed during the post Christmas DVD watching stupor.  Yes, it has been a good year.

Because I decided not to decorate our Christmas cake this year I left it until quite late to make it.  Thankfully I didn't' have any helpers other than a small Monkey on my hip trying to peer into the mixer bowl and a couple of taste testers at every stage.  It turns out Monkey quite likes fruit cake mixture...

I gave him the beater first and he licked away at that and I tried to take it back and he growled at me... yes, like a puppy with it's bone.  I gave him the spatula thinking I could switch them out... he growled again.  I figure if he has the bowl that's three items for two hands, he's got to let me have something!  Nope, he wanted it ALL... there were some big tears when I finally had to take it all away and clean him up.

The next big job was decorating the Christmas tree...

Lion got the thrill, not of putting the angel on the top, but putting the top of the tree on the top!  He was pretty proud of himself.

After the angel on the top, the first decorations to go on were three identical snowflakes Nano sent last year...

The precious and breakable ornaments go at the top and other than that it's wherever they land.

But, the same as every year, things got a little manic and had to be brought back under control a few times but in the end we had a decorated tree.

So that brings us to Christmas Eve... Wolf was working late so I got moving and got my very last minute baking done and Santa started doing his thing.  Santa left them one stocking each this year... and that was it.  I think I'll be asking him to do that every year... it was so much nicer.  The big boys and I had got into a bit of the wrapping earlier in the week, doing the stuff for Wolf and for the cousins and the things that were for Monkey from each of them.  That still left a lot to do though.  I will admit, there was much less last minute wrapping than other years which I am thankful for.  Wolf helped with the wrapping and general tidying up of the lounge room when he got home.  I made our food gifts up for family members and thought I must have been insane when I came up with what I was going to include.
So here we have a representation of what was included in each gift, generally one for each person it was intended for, other than the chocolate powder, that was one per family.  Top left, we put in a chocolate pop for them (these are the ones I did for Lion's class, I didn't take a photo of the next batch). Bottom left, my ninjabreadmen... I did as many as I could in ninja pose and decorated but with severe back pain by that point Wolf finished filling in that tray for me and that was it.  Right, Italian Hot Chocolate powder (aka Love Potion).  This isn't the batch I made for the family gifts, this is another lot but I didn't take a photo of the cute little jars I did up for family.

So, now we are a Christmas day...  Lion and Dragon woke early but had been told they were not to come in to us until the sun was up.  So, as the first rays of light filled the morning two EXCITED little boys appeared beside our bed telling us "It's CHRISTMAS and SANTA has BEEEEEEEN".  Up we got, woke up the poor little Monkey (he did NOT like that idea) and we got into the gifts.

I realise there are way more photos of Monkey here than of his brothers but they didn't exactly sit still enough to take photos.  At one point Monkey was doing his best to take photos of all that was going on because that was what mummy was doing!  Monkey took a while to figure out what was going on but he was a champion present opener in the end.  He opened with gusto but considered each gift carefully before moving on to the next.  Special gifts in the above image that need to be pointed out (I'm guessing you can click on it to see it larger) are (top row, middle image) Monkey's gift purchased with money from Lapun Mama, a wooden car parking garage... it is in CONSTANT use.  (bottom right corner) Lion and Dragon with their iPod Nano and docking speakers that we purchased with their money from Lapun Mama.  (image above that) Three boys trying to decide just what their gift from Grandpap and Nano is... it's a blow-up "carwash" that you can attach the hose to and ride bikes through and it looks like great fun... but it's been TOO wet to use it so far :-(  Try explaining that to a 4 year old, it's TOO WET to use a toy that makes you get wet.

So, after church we headed around to Aunty Chimeras for morning tea and to open gifts with the family.  Romeo, Juliette and Ladybug couldn't make it because they were with Juliette's family for lunch but the kids that were there were all wearing their Christmas shirts/dress that I had made so we did the best we could to get a photo...

It's pretty much what they are all like anyway... not perfect but perfectly wonderful.

So, although it's late, and it's 2 hours until next year right now, from the McTavish family to your family...

Merry Christmas

Christmas Day 2009

Ahhh, Christmas. It's been and gone, we are still assembling toys and promising to eventually glue together the ones that don't want to stay together like they are supposed to and finding a brand new array of Lego under our feet and trying to remember who belongs to this or that new DVD or book. We are eating all the gifts we can (only the ones that are actually edible though) and eagerly waiting to try out some of the new cooking toys!
So how did our day go? well, sit back, grab a coffee and hold on tight. It's going to be a long one so i can remember it after next week!
Well, it started the night before like any Christmas day does. The boys got dressed in their PJ's and had a photo with the Christmas tree
They put out milk and biscotti for Santa in a Christmas bowl and carrot and beans for the Reindeer in a deer bowl... I told the boys that way Santa could fill the dish with water from the hose outside after they finished their veggies.
We had DC and L around for supper while I finished wrapping all the gifts and making sure I had tracked down all the gifts I had hidden. After they left we stayed up a bit to let Santa in and I snapped a photo after he had left some gifts for the boys...
In the morning I was woken up at 5:30 by the smallest of the boys for a feed and had JUST got him back to sleep at 6:00 when the bigger boys came in VERY excited "SANTA'S BEEN AND HE'S LEFT US PRESENTS!!!" So we dragged ourselves out of bed and went to inspect the mass of gifts under the tree. Now, I have this deal with Santa, he gives the practical presents so Mum and Dad get the credit for the cool gifts... I didn't factor in that NONE of the gifts were there when the kids went to bed so it didn't matter who it said it was from on the tag the kids thought they were ALL brought by Santa.
Anyway, the ones that Santa really did bring were pretty exciting even though they were practical... and there were gold (chocolate) coins in the toe of their stockings!
The big boys both got sleeping bags from Santa...
And the little Monkey got a couple of pairs of socks...
The rules are we do stockings and gifts from Santa then we have to stop and have breakfast and get ready for church before we plough through as many more gifts as we can before we have to leave for church. The boys opened their gifts from Granpap and Nano.
After we got home we were able to open the rest of our gifts and Mummy got a super-de-duper cupcake holder and silicone cupcake doo-dads.
and Wolf got the bluetooth car kit he's been drooling over.
I think I should have bought him a tea set like I got for Little Bear... he seems to like it just as much and it was heaps cheaper :-)
We try to keep gifts on the sane side of things and for the kids we stick with something to read; Lion - Atlas of the Universe, Dragon - Beginners Guide to Raising Dragons, Monkey - Boggle Eye Buggy Book (a board book you can attach to the pram). Something to wear; Lion - Lightening McQueen PJ's, Dragon - Robot PJ's, Monkey - a cute little monkey outfit. And something to play with; Lion - Power Miners Lego, Dragon - Matchbox Junkyard set, Monkey - A lunch set (he's got enough toys for now).
After church and finishing off opening the presents we headed over to Grannysaurus and Grandad's house for lunch with the rest of the family and some more present opening (that's where the photo of Wolf and Little Bear is from). Then it was home for a nap before heading to my Aunts house for dinner with ALL the family. I don't have many photos from lunch or ANY photos from dinner but it was all fun and lovely to see everyone having a great time.
You know how every year you are sure that there is another gift somewhere but you just can't think of what it is or who it's for... All the night before I was thinking it was dad's book I had forgotten but remembered at the last minute that was giving me the uneasy feeling. All Christmas day I was thinking it was Romeo and Juliette's gift that they got a couple of months ago so I didn't have anything for them on the day... just now I have remembered that I have a swing for Monkey 'hidden' in the laundry (in plain sight) that has been there since July waiting for Christmas... Silly, silly, Mummy.
Well, I hope your Christmas day was as fun as ours and all your toys worked and you remembered the batteries... and remembered the reason for CHRISTmas.

TomWho and WhatMan?

In the age of TomToms and Navmans our Christmas lights tour guide is waaaay lowtech...

I would have torn the pages out of a phone book map but it would have needed 8 or 9 pages taped together, with google maps at least I could print out just the sections I needed to make our map.

I printed out the local radio stations tour route (except it doesn't print the line of the route or the points they have highlighted) then cross-checked with the local papers highlights and slightly modified the route ready for our trip.

Last year we had dinner then took snacks with us, I think this year I will take a leaf out of Mrs Nurse Boy's book and drive through at Maccas for dinner and they can eat while we drive. It might keep them quieter that way.

Now to convince Wolf to take us. We do Christmas lights one night every year but the way Wolf goes on about it you'd think we go every night of December and had to club him and drag him along behind the car to get him to go!

Sunday Snapshot

I wish you were merry Christmas, I wish you were merry Christmas, I wish you were merry Christmas and a happy new you!
And that, folks, is why 3 year olds don't write Christmas carols.

So it's time for Sunday Snapshot again. I'm doing really well, we are three weeks running now that I have managed to churn out a Sunday Snapshot on time... three cheers for me!

The biggest even this week... Decorating the Christmas tree! Oh it's a lovely time. We light the fire, lovingly pull out precious glass ornaments and the kids delicately pass them to mummy and daddy to hang on the tree as we all lovingly gaze at each other and sing Christmas carol in perfect tune while granny plays the piano by candle light and the snow falls silently to the ground outside the window... Um, yeah, not so much.
The kids hadn't napped, it was stinkin' hot, the aircon was going, Mummy hadn't napped, Daddy had spent the morning at work for the last day of their pre-Christmas sale, mummy had been trying to re-arrange the small lounge room to be able fit in a rather large Christmas tree, the ornaments are all plastic and the clips that hold their hooks on are all falling off so many don't stay on the tree, the tinsel wouldn't let go of all the dust on it when I tried to shake it out before putting it away last year but the second I pulled it out of the box this year it shed every speck of dust all over my face, the kids were bursting into tears over crazy little things... it was an interesting time. We did manage to have fun in amongst all the chaos though and we got some photos to prove it.

Dragon hangs the first ornament.

Lion hangs the second ornament.

Dragon has an interesting way of hanging ornaments I have dubbed "the cluster method". You grab a bunch of ornaments that have hooked on to each other while in storage and hang them as one globulous lump on the tree weighing down the branch dangerously. He was quite proud of this technique.

Wolf kept himself amused by decorating anything that stayed still long enough.

Monkey was less than impressed.

Believe it or not, that tree there is almost done.

Mummy made Wolf remove the decorations from his youngest child.

Finished... FINALLY.

Our plans for this week...
  • Climate Smart man coming (Monday)
  • Grocery shopping (Monday)
  • Photos for Aunty Em and Pete (Monday)
  • Mummy getting a haircut (Tuesday)
  • Baking day with Aunty Em (Wednesday)
  • Decorate Christmas cake (Wednesday or Thursday maybe?)
  • Finish Christmas shopping (two gifts to go!) (eek, when???)
  • Remember to cook dinner most if not all nights
  • Nap

I hope your Christmas plans are all coming together!

Our new tradition...

Wolf sizzles some sausages

Lion and Dragon get excited

Lion is learning to put his own sauce on... He got a little too much this time.

It hasn't been an intentional to start a tradition for our family, it's just happened. You know how if you know you are going to a fete or something you start craving fairy floss? well I do anyway. If I know the night markets are on I start craving those little kiev balls, even if i'm not going to the markets. If it's a sunday I know Bunnings will be having a sausage sizzle out the front and I start craving a sausage in a blanket. So one sunday we needed to go to Bunnings so we got a sausage each but one isn't enough. So that night we decided to have our own sausage sizzle at home and invited grandma and grandad over. It was so easy, they were cooked on the barbie, all I did was slice onion, butter bread and put out the sauce and stuff. The first night we didnt even use plates, but the boys were too messy for that. So the next week I got to craving a sunday sausage sizzle and so we did it again, and then the next week and it was then that we decided that this is an easy dinner for sunday and perhaps it should just be our planned dinner, sunday nights are sausage sizzle night. We can invite someone over to share it with us and it's no fuss, cheap, no glitz and glamour to it, kid friendly, we can eat it inside or out. This was sounding good. The last few weeks we have included a bonfire too with marshmallows toasted on sticks, it was too windy for that tonight. Last week our friend DC came over to share it with us, it was my kind of entertaining. Hospitality is not my gifting. A few years ago if I was having anyone over I would either ring my friend C to tell her what I had out and had prepared to see if I had missed anything or invite C&A too because hospitality was definately her gift, she would help me not look quite so useless in front of my guests:). Then they left town.

I MISS YOU GUYS SOOOOO MUCH!!!!! COME BACK!!!!!!!

sorry, off on a tangent there... anyway the point is. Our sunday BBQ rocks. If you want to come to one, dont wait to be invited, just give me some warning that you are coming so I can hide all the junk:)

**********

Sorry, some days are bloggy ones, some arent, I hope you can cope with our bunny-hopping blogging style. You'll get a bloggy-feast on days we have a bit of time and other days are a bloggy-famine.
